Maintaining a safe community is one of the Near Northwest Management District’s top priorities. The community is safer today than when the District was first created, thanks to innovative and aggressive programs. In fact, from 2008 to 2010, crime dropped as much as 80% in some areas.
How do we do it? Partnerships are the key. The District contracts with Harris County Precinct 1 Constables to provide eight constables to patrol our 16 square mile area. These Constables work closely with other local law enforcement agencies and property owners to create a secure environment.
The District encourages commercial property owners to participate in making the area safer by using our crime-track.com web site to provide our Constables with information about criminal or even suspicious activity. By becoming a member of the site, commercial property owners can log on and see reports made by other property owners and add information to those reports as well as making new reports. Area residents may log onto crime-track.com to make reports but cannot see reports made by others.
The District also hosts a monthly security meeting where law enforcement officers, private security personnel and community members work together to reduce crime in the area.

Once again thanks to all of the concerned residents and business owners who attended our monthly Security Meeting. This meeting we simply engaged in a discussion of security topics for the area.

The Constables are seeing a drop in homicides but saw an increase in property crimes around the holidays.
Community Concerns
An area resident called in with a complaint about the bathrooms on the former golf course being used as gathering locations for suspicious individuals. There was also a shell casing found. Constables emphasized that as City of Houston property suspicious people spotted on the course should be immediately reported them to the Houston Police Department. The shell was reviewed and determined to possibly have come from a weapon typically used by police. Again, if residents hear shots fired they should be reported to HPD immediately.
The District reported that an informal New Year’s Eve party was held on the golf course that was not reported to the police. However, residents did call wanting the District to clean up the liquor bottles and fireworks trash left behind the next day. The golf course is a city property and is not open to the public after dark.
Beth Ellis of Linda Vista Apartments offered her kudos to the Constables for their recent efforts to discourage loitering around a convenience store near her property.
Tom Miller, owner of Hollyview Apartments, pointed out that the apartments along W. Little York and W. Gulf Bank are the next area that require focused improvement. The Management District is currently working with our active apartment managers to create a strategy to address this concern.
Cruise for Smiles Toy Drive
WJ also reported that the Precinct 1Constable’s Annual Cruise for Smiles Toy Drive was a success. One location to receive toys was Linda Vista Apartments where 8 children also received new bicycles. The Constables enjoy this event because it is the one time when they sound their sirens and people run toward them. The annual toy drive is the Constables’ opportunity to get involved with community members in a positive way. They would like to thank all of the businesses who donated more than 700 toys to the effort. For many of the children who received toys, this is the only present they get for Christmas.
Personal safety with Deputy Art St. John
Deputy St. John urged business owners to be aware of everyone that comes into their establishment. During the holidays several area businesses were robbed by an elderly woman who was able to successfully commit her crimes because she didn’t “look like a criminal.” She was caught. However, Deputy St. John urged business owners to remember that criminals come in all ages and genders.
Bike Trail Completed. . . sort of
The Bike Trail from Pinemont to Antoine has been completed. However, construction on the bridge crossing West Little York and the bridge crossing 610 has closed some portions of the trail. The Grand Opening event for the trail will be held once this construction is completed. Much of the trail is still usable and many cyclists are riding into our community for the first time. Please welcome them.
